Preparing Your Recycling

Did you know that food residue on just one recyclable item can contaminate a whole batch of recyclables? Watch this video to make sure your recyclable items are correctly prepared to drop off at our Recycling Center!
​What Does Marion Utilities Accept?
Any of the following are commonly acceptable. Please make sure that all materials are CLEAN!  
  • Office Paper - printer paper, lined paper, envelopes, shredded paper.
  • Other Paper - Newspaper and ads, magazines, soft cover books, white packing paper, junk mail.
  • Books - Hard cover, three ring binders, spiral notebooks (wire and plastic).
  • Cardboard - clean corrugated boxes (staples and tape ok) cereal & food boxes, brown paper bags.
  • Plastics - Separate into three groups: #1 - #2 - and #3-7  -  remove lids, rinse clean. No plastic bags or film, no packing peanuts or styrofoam. Labels are ok!
  • Glass - Bottles and jars only, clear and colored, remove lids and rinse clean. No plate glass or glass cookware. Labels and rings from lids are ok.
  • Metal - cans and lids, separate aluminum and steel, remove lids and rinse clean. Labels are ok.

​What Does Marion Utilities Not Accept?
Unfortunately, we cannot accept the following items:
  • Soiled cardboard or paper (pizza boxes, paper plates, etc.)
  • Batteries
  • Yard waste
  • Electronics
  • Tires 
  • Household hazardous waste
  • Light bulbs
Please check with Grant County's recycling center for possible options for items we can't accept at (765) 677-6044 ext. 148.
​Drop Off Hours & Location
  • Open Monday and Friday, 11 am - 6 pm.
  • Located at 1300 N. Washington St.
  • Enter the drive on Washington Street - enter the overhead door slowly.
  • Please have your items pre-sorted - an attendant will be on hand to ensure everything is properly sorted.
  • Exit on to Stephenson Street.

​What Do I Do For Large Items That Don’t Fit In The Toter?
 If you have an item that does not fit it in the toter, you will need to schedule a large item pick-up appointment by calling our Solid Waste Division at 765.664.2391, option 4 or emailing solidwaste@marionutilities.com. Please set your items out for pick-up on the day of your appointment by 6 a.m. Many large items can also be dropped off at our Transfer Station at 1300 N. Washington St. Fees apply, see the menu for Fees for Extra Solid Waste.

Fees for Extra Solid Waste

​In order to maintain the Solid Waste Utility, the Marion Utilities Service Board has passed the following guidelines and procedures of fees for additional trash and large items.
EXTRA TOTERS FOR PICK-UP
  • Tags | $4.00
EXTRA LARGE ITEMS FOR PICK-UP
  • Large Item | $10.00
  • Large Item pick-up fee | $15.00
ITEMS FOR TRANSFER STATION
  • Individual Items | $10.00 each
  • Bag of Trash/Miscellaneous Items | $3.00 each
  • Truck Load (Level/MSW) | $40.00
  • Truck Load (Level/C&D) | $60.00*
  • Truck Load (Mounded/MSW) | $67.00
  • Truck Load (Mounded/C&D) | $100.00*
  • Misc. Solid Waste per Cubit Yard | $18.00
  • Construction/Demolition Solid Waste per Cubit Yard | $27.00*
    ​*Shingles will be charged at the C&D rate x 1.5
MEGA BAGS
  • $40.00 plus $120.00 (collection and disposal fee)
ROLL-OFF BOX​
  • 10-yard Dumpster (up to two tons) | $530.00
  • 20-yard Dumpster (up to four tons) | $710.00
  • 30-yard Dumpster (up to six tons) | $890.00
  • 40-yard Dumpster (up to eight tons) | $1,070.00
There is an extra $15.00/day fee for any dumpster needed for more than 10 days. Fees include delivery, pick-up, and disposal.
You can pay for any of these solid waste services online or with our automated phone system. If you would like to use one of these payment options, please call us at 765-664-2391, extension 147, or email solidwaste@marionutilities.com so we can set up the charge for you.

Solid Waste FAQ's

What Is the Current Rate For Solid Waste Pick-Up Services?
The current rate is $13.80, which includes your weekly pick-up, one 96-gallon toter, and one free large-item pick-up per month. We will provide pick-up for additional APPROVED toters.
What Is My Pick-up Day and Where Is My Pick-up?
Complete the form below to find your pick-up day and the location of your pick-up (alley or street).
​What is the Pick-up Schedule?
Solid Waste is picked up Monday thru Thursday each week beginning as early as 6 a.m. When there is a holiday, pick up days will usually run one day behind schedule for the remaining days of the week.
I am planning a special event. Do you provide extra toters?
We provide roll-off boxes/toters for events that are sponsored by the City of Marion, Corporations, and Nonprofits. We do not provide extra toters for personal events (i.e. birthday/group parties, etc.). Reserve a Roll-off Box.
Do You Pick Up Yard Waste?
No. Please call the Marion Street Department at 668.4496 if you have yard waste (i.e. grass clippings, leaves, brush, limbs).
​How Do I Schedule A Large Item Pick-Up Appointment?
