Industrial Pretreatment Program

Preventing Problems
What is the Industrial Pretreatment Program?

The Marion Pretreatment Program was implemented in 1977 to reduce the level of pollutants discharged by industries and other non-domestic wastewater sources into Marion's sewer system. The goals of the program are to protect Marion's Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) from pollutants that may interfere with plant operation, to prevent pollutants (that may pass through the WWTP untreated) from being introduced into the Mississinewa River, and to improve opportunities for the WWTP to use wastewater and sludges that are generated (ex: land application of Biosolids).

Dischargers are required to meet the requirements of Marion’s Sewer Use Ordinance and 40 CFR 403.  The control of pollutants may require treatment prior to discharge to the sewer system. Limits may be met by the non-domestic sources through pollution prevention techniques (ex: product substitution, recycling or reusing of materials) or treatment of the wastewater.

Marion Utilities evaluates all  non-domestic dischargers for potential impact to the WWTP.  If necessary, dischargers are issued permits, inspected, and sampled.
