The trash in these pictures was collected in the sanitary sewer. The problem with plastic trash and wipes in the sewer system has become progressively worse in the past several years. The increase in trash has resulted in an increase in sludge disposal costs.
Fall 2008, Marion Utilities spent over $15,000 to dispose of some sludge because it had so much trash in it that we could not land apply it with the rest of our sludge. Clean, trash-free sludge would have cost $2000 to land apply.
