Long Term Control Plan - Update

Long Term Control Plan revision was submitted to IDEM on September 30, 2009 as required by the State of Indiana.  IDEM reviewed the document and responded on December 7th with a letter that identifies approximately 15 items in the plan that they would like Marion to address.  Most of these items are minor and easily corrected.  However IDEM’s main concern with the proposed plan is that they do not believe it goes far enough in reducing the number of overflows.

Slaker Project

The City of Marion has enjoyed a great reputation over the years of providing excellent quality through its drinking water system.  One of the reasons for this reputation is that, many years ago, community leaders chose to “go the extra mile” in terms of the level of treatment that would be provided for consumers. While most community water suppliers of similar size provide filtration and disinfection, Marion Utilities takes the treatment process a step further to provide softened water for its customers.

Trash in the Sewer?

The problem with plastic trash and wipes in the sewer system has become progressively worse in the past several years.

The increase in trash has resulted in an increase in sludge disposal costs.  For pictures and more information click here.

EPA to review Marion’s Sewer Use Ordinance

Marion Utilities has made changes to its Sewer Use Ordinance and has submitted the changes to EPA and IDEM for approval. Some of the changes were required by EPA and IDEM. Other changes were made in an overall effort to update and reformat the ordinance. View the Proposed Sewer Use Ordinance here and see how the changes will affect you! South Marion Water Main Construction

Starting in July of 2009, the Marion Utilities will be installing approximately 9,000 feet of 8” and 12” water main in the area of 50th Street to 42nd Street, Western Avenue to Harmon Street.

This project received the lowest bid from Keith Sullivan Excavating of $785,957.30 and is expected to be complete mid October, 2009.

This project is being done to improve service to the South Marion residents.

If you have any questions regarding this project please call Bill Glessner or Patrick Pinkerton at 664-2391 ext.#4

Water Main Replacement at 3rd and "D" St.

Starting in March of 2009 the Marion Utilities will be installing a new 12" water main along 4th St.; from Western to Gallatin, 3rd St.; from "D" to Hill, and on "D" St.; from 5th to Spencer.

The project is expected to last approximately 6 months at an approximate cost of $700,000.  The process of installation is directional drilling.  This process allows the contractor to install pipe without using an open trench method, keeping the road cuts and disturbed sidewalks to a minimum.

Long Term Control Plan

At a recent meeting of the Marion Utility Service Board held at the Marion Public Library on September 3, 2009, plans were announced for the control of combined sewer overflows (CSO’s) into the Mississinewa River. Mr. Karl Tanner, a project manager with Camp, Dresser and McKee Consulting Engineers in Indianapolis, presented an executive summary of final drafts for the evaluation of control alternatives and the cost-effective alternative selected for implementation.
